Why should I get an ultrasound before an abortion?

Even if you’re planning to take the abortion pill, an ultrasound may be required by telehealth providers before prescribing the medication.

           Here’s why:

           1. It’s vital to know how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Abortion methods differ based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. The abortion pill is only FDA-approved for up to ten weeks gestation. An ultrasound can accurately measure the gestational age and help determine your eligibility for different options.

           2. In order to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.

Sometimes a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Abortion pills will not treat this condition. An ultrasound confirms the location of your pregnancy to ensure your safety.

           3. It’s important to confirm viability.

An ultrasound can detect whether your pregnancy is progressing normally and check for a fetal heartbeat. If there’s no heartbeat or development, you may be having a miscarriage and could avoid a procedure that isn’t medically necessary.

COVID-19 has left many in a state of confusion and worry. When dealing with a pregnancy in the middle of this pandemic, a lot of questions can arise. A mother’s first concern becomes the health of her pregnancy or newborn. While we wish to provide answers to all of your questions, it’s unfortunately too soon to say anything definitively. The CDC simply hasn’t had enough time to collect the needed data to make conclusions. As a nation and community, all we can do is remain calm and vigilant. We can monitor our health, practice social distancing, stay home, and limit our travels. When we find ourselves having to run an errand, we can practice cleanliness.

COVID-19 is a respiratory virus. This virus is part of the coronavirus family, which is actually a collection of different viruses. Some of these related viruses are SARS-COV and MERS-COV. These two viruses are now under control, but it took time to understand them and how to combat them. COVID-19 is the latest coronavirus and affects the human respiratory system. The known symptoms are difficulty breathing, coughing, and fever.

It is mainly believed that COVID-19 is spread from person to person by respiratory droplets through coughing and sneezing. This virus gains entrance into your body by contact with your eyes, nose, and mouth. Based on a new

Many pregnant women worry that COVID-19 will be passed to their child, or that their pregnancy makes them more likely to become sick. A lot of misinformation on this topic is being spread across social media and other corners of the internet. The CDC has said that it’s just too soon to make any concrete statements. In a few cases, women with COVID-19 have been documented to have pregnancy problems and preterm births, but the CDC has assured that it’s too soon to say if the two are actually related.

What they do know is that it’s important to make sure you protect yourself. How can you do that? You can cover your coughs with your elbow, keep a six-foot distance from others when you are in public, avoid those who are sick, wash your hands, and avoid touching your face. It’s important to limit stress and worries as much as possible while pregnant for your own health and the development of your baby.

How Should I Protect My Newborn?

The best way to protect your newborn is to keep yourself clean and maintain a clean environment. Limit visitors and maintain social distancing if you and your newborn need to leave the house.

           Is It Safe To Breastfeed?

Based on what the CDC currently knows, it is safe to breastfeed, but should be talked about with your doctor. The CDC has monitored women who have given birth while testing as COVID-19 positive and have found no traces of the virus in breast milk. The CDC asks that mothers who breastfeed take precautions while doing so, such as washing your hands beforehand and wearing a mask if possible if symptoms are present or have tested positive.

What Can I Do to Help?

This is where social distancing is the most important. Maintaining a six-foot distance between everyone allows a safer way to interact. Make sure you are covering all of the common sense procedures mentioned above, such as cleanliness, covering your cough with your elbow and most importantly, making sure to stay home if you are sick. If you have recently traveled abroad or come into contact with someone who has been exposed to COVID-19, take measures to self-quarantine and communicate your situation with your doctor.

The best way Americans can help our community, leadership, and medical staff is by limiting contact with others, not joining groups larger than ten, and avoiding travel, vacations, and community gatherings. The most important thing that can be done is to stay calm and to maintain hope for a brighter future

When people come to our center for pregnancy testing or consultations, they often share with us stories of how they thought they couldn’t become pregnant or why they thought they were safe. Many people share these misconceptions, which is why we wanted to look at some of the more common myths about unintended pregnancy and sex.

Myth #1: I Can’t Get Pregnant When I’m On My Period

This is one of the most common misconceptions about sex we hear. Many women think that they cannot become pregnant during their menstrual periods. In truth, it is possible for women to become pregnant during menstruation. The probability is low, but the possibility exists. Also, STDs or STIs (sexually transmitted diseases or infections) can be passed between partners any day of the month — even during menstruation.

Myth #2: Certain Positions Prevent Pregnancy

Some people believe that by having sex in a certain position it’s impossible to get pregnant. A related myth is that you can prevent pregnancy by positioning yourself a certain way after intercourse. Both of these ideas are false. Sperm can travel into your uterus and fertilize an egg no matter what position you are in. In addition, a man’s sperm can stay alive inside your body for up to 5 days after sex, making the position you use irrelevant.

Myth #3: You Can’t Get Pregnant the First Time You Have Sex

Many young women believe that if they are virgins, they cannot get pregnant the first time they have sex. A similar myth is that you can’t get pregnant if you only have sex once or that you have to have sex multiple times in order to conceive. In both of these situations, the truth is that the chance of pregnancy exists any time you have sex, no matter if it’s your first time or not.

Myth #4: Condoms and Birth Control Prevent All Pregnancies

While condoms and prescription birth control can help prevent pregnancy, no birth control method is 100% effective. Pregnancies can happen even when you use birth control correctly. All forms of birth control include information about their failure rates — in other words, the percentage of times they weren’t effective. You should also note that prescription birth control methods don’t provide any protection against STDs or STIs.

            According to the CDC

, the only way to keep yourself completely safe from STDs is to not to have sex, or only have sex in a mutually-monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner.

Myth #5: The Morning After Pill is for Everyone

The morning after pill is marketed as a safe way to prevent pregnancy if you have had unprotected sex or if your birth control fails. However, the effectiveness of this medication varies

            depending on factors

such as weight, the time it is taken after intercourse, and other medications you may be taking, such as barbiturates or St. John’s Wort. All of these factors lower the effectiveness of these medications and make pregnancy more likely to occur.

Myth #6: Birth Control is Safe and Simple

Birth control is often marketed as a safe way to prevent pregnancy with no downsides or serious side effects.

            Common side effects

of these medications are spotting or bleeding between periods, nausea, breast tenderness, and headaches. However, there are other side effects that, while less common, can become serious, such as high blood pressure, blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes. If you are considering these medications, it’s important to talk with your doctor about any other medications you are taking and be informed of any potential risks.

For many, the holidays are a time of joy and family gatherings, reuniting with friends and loved ones they haven’t seen in years, and enjoying the time with each other. However, when you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, those gatherings can turn from a source of happiness to a source of anxiety. While they may mean well, the conversations and questions that can arise can be uncomfortable and hard to navigate. In today’s post, we discuss some tips and best practices for handling these conversations with your family in a respectful and loving way. For more resources and support, contact

Think Through What You Want to Share

Whether your family members know about your pregnancy or not before arriving for the gathering, they’re bound to have questions for you (is the father in the picture, what pregnancy option have you decided on, etc.). And while you can’t control their questions, you can control the way the conversation goes. If a question is asked that makes you uncomfortable, simply tell them you’d rather not discuss it right now and try to change the topic. It may be helpful to think through beforehand what aspects of your pregnancy you’re comfortable talking about. Consider sharing what you’ve decided on with a few other family members who can provide you with support and help steer the conversation back on track when needed.

           Navigating the Many Opinions

While they mean well, you’ll most likely have a few family members that will share their opinions on your unplanned pregnancy with you. They’re often speaking from a place of love and concern, but it doesn’t always come out this way. When faced with this situation, try to turn it into a positive. Thank them for their opinion or their insights and try to keep the conversation moving. If this doesn’t work, gently tell them you’ll consider their opinion, but this is your decision and you’ll do what you think is best; perhaps saying something like “I really appreciate your opinion, but right now what I really need is your support.”

           Give Them Grace

One of the most important things to remember is how you felt when you first discovered you were pregnant. The rush of emotions, the questions you had, and how it took time for you to process the news. Now it’s your family’s turn to process the news; try to extend them some grace if they reactive negatively. More often than not, they’re reacting emotionally and even though they may say some hurtful things, after they’ve had time to process, the emotions will settle and apologies will be made.

Above all else, make sure that you’re not overextending yourself. Holidays can be a hectic time, and if you need to take a break throughout the activities, or not even attend at all and schedule a smaller family get together, do it! It’s easy to feel pressured to attend, but only you know your limits and you need to do what’s best for you. You may also consider planning a fun or relaxing activity after the holidays to unwind and have something to look forward to. You’re caring for two people now, not just yourself, and need to ensure you’re looking out for both of you first and foremost.

When you find out you’re expecting, no matter your age or life situation, one of the first big fears that arise has to do with money. “How can I afford this?” is often the resounding question when it comes to affording motherhood. It’s important to realize that babies are born on high and low incomes and that, even with an unexpected pregnancy, you have the power to create the life you want. In addition to free pregnancy tests, Mya Women’s Center can provide you with free parenting resources and support, while also connecting you with community resources to help you get on your feet.

The number one way you can protect yourself (and your little one) from financial stress is to build savings. Just $400 in cash can be the difference between bankruptcy and stability. If you aren’t already working, finding a job while expecting can be challenging, but isn’t impossible. In addition, workplace pregnancy accommodations are now mandatory in most states, making it easier for you to balance work and pregnancy. Working throughout your pregnancy will help you build this financial cushion and prevent you from being one of the 2/3 of American families who have $0 in savings.

Earning an income and saving throughout pregnancy will help you prepare for maternity leave, when your income may be between 0%-60% of what you earned full-time. Since the typical maternity leave is 6-8 weeks, make a goal to save about 2 months’ worth of necessary expenses in preparation for time with your newborn.

Little by Little, It Is Possible

While it may seem crazy or impossible to save up a few hundred dollars, it’s imperative that you find belief in and motivation toward this goal. Budgeting your income toward savings first and your necessary expenses (rent, utilities, medical care, and groceries) next will make this possible. No matter how much you earn, take 10% of your paycheck and deposit that into your savings account (a $250 paycheck -> $25 in savings) each time you get paid.

By prioritizing savings and needs, you’re establishing excellent financial habits that will benefit your little family long-term. Once you’ve saved and paid for rent, utilities, and groceries, you can use the left-over income to pay for treats, fun outings, and other wants. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of your money:

Use coupons, savings apps, grocery ads, and buy generic brand items to save money. A dollar saved here or there adds up!

Create a shopping list in advance and take “inventory” at home before heading to the store. This will help you avoid distractions that could lead to overspending.

Even with a coupon, cashback, or some other marketing ploy, double-check you’re under budget, you really will use the item, and that it’s an immediate need.

The strongest financial stress typically surfaces when a child is near 6 months old because that’s usually when daycare costs and the pressure from lack of savings collide. Although an extra $5 for an unplanned trip for fast food may not seem like a big deal right now, keep in mind that this tiny human (who’s arriving shortly) will be relying on your self-discipline soon.

It’s no secret that life will be different once your new baby arrives, and your budget will need to adjust too. Later in pregnancy, begin to think about who will care for your infant and what childcare expenses will be required once you return to work. At that time, you’ll need to adjust your budget to account for childcare costs while prioritizing savings and needs over wants.

As your due date approaches, communicate with your employer about your maternity leave and time off. Find confidence in knowing that, in most states, it’s illegal to fire or lay off an employee for medical or pregnancy reasons. With a savings account in place, clear communication with your employer, a job you’ll be able to return to after maternity leave, and budgeting practice underway, you’ve already begun establishing a strong financial foundation for you and your new baby.

No matter your financial position, social status, or family history, there are financial moves you can make immediately, while pregnant, that will reduce the severity of money trouble once your baby arrives. At

Abortion is often one of the first pregnancy options that comes to mind when you discover you are pregnant unexpectedly. However, since it is the option that requires medication or surgery, it is the one you need to know the most about so you can make an informed decision about your pregnancy. There are two main types of abortion: medical abortion and surgical abortion.

A common myth in today’s society is that you should feel ashamed in making an adoption plan. It takes a great deal of courage to choose adoption for your child, and there is no shame in choosing this option, as you are gifting another family with the ability to raise a child that they may be unable to have otherwise. This is why adoption is sometimes referred to as “alternative parenting.” There are three main types of adoption: closed, semi-open, and open. Each refers to the level of contact you want to have with the adoptive parents during and after the adoption process:

In a closed adoption, neither you nor the adoptive parents will have any contact with each other. You each have an adoption representative that will communicate on your behalf. Your adoption representative will meet with you and discuss your questions and concerns and then choose an adoptive family that they feel is best suited for your situation.

In a semi-open adoption, you are able to view profiles of potential adoptive families and have some say in which family her child is placed with. You may have some contact with the adoptive parents during the process, but once the adoption is finalized, all contact is typically handled through the adoption agency. If you’d like to receive updates on how your child is doing after the adoption, you can request pictures and/or letters from the adoptive family that will be passed on to you through your adoption agency representative.

In an open adoption, there is a great deal of communication between yourself and the adoptive parents, both during and after the adoption is finalized. Both you and the adoptive parents can decide upon the level of involvement you’d like to have in your child’s life after they are placed with the adoptive family.

While this can seem like an impossible task to women and couples who were not expecting a pregnancy, parenting is not as difficult as you might think. There are many resources and organizations that offer free support and guidance to prepare you for parenthood and what comes after that we can refer you to.

If you are considering an abortion, it is important to equip yourself with as much knowledge as you can about the procedure, the risks, and the effects on your physical, mental, and emotional health. There are several different types of abortion procedures available depending on your health and how far along your pregnancy is.

Before you have an abortion, you will need to take a pregnancy test to confirm your pregnancy. Then, you will meet with a nurse, doctor, or health center counselor to discuss whether abortion is the right decision for you and what options are available to you. You will then need to get an ultrasound to determine how far along you are and whether you have a viable pregnancy.

           The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is a mostly out-patient procedure in which you self-administer a series of pills that terminate the pregnancy. Before receiving this pill, you will need to meet with a nurse or doctor to be examined and to discuss your options. Once you decide to use the abortion pill, you will be given the pills and instructions on how to take them.

Because there is a lot of bleeding and discomfort that you may experience after you have taken the pills, many suggest stocking up on maxi-pads, pain medication, and food prior to taking the pills. It is a good idea to have someone with you or on-call in case you need support. Many suggest using a heating pad to help alleviate cramping and discomfort.

The first medication you will take is mifepristone. This medication stops the pregnancy from growing. Many women experience nausea after taking this pill. You may also be given an antibiotic to fight against any infection that may occur after the procedure. You may start bleeding after taking mifepristone, but it is not very common.

The second pill you will take is misoprostol. This will be taken up to 48 hours after the first pill and your doctor or nurse will give you instructions about when you should take it. This medicine will induce cramping and bleeding about one to four hours after taking the pill to empty your uterus. It is normal to discharge blot clots and clumps of tissue during this process. This process usually lasts about four to five hours, but it is normal for your body to take longer to evacuate all of the pregnancy tissue. The cramping may last a couple of days after you take the pill.

You are able to take pain medication to help manage the cramping and anti-nausea medication if provided by your doctor or nurse. It is important to avoid aspirin, as it may increase your bleeding. Other symptoms you may experience are:

           Suction abortion or vacuum aspiration

Suction abortions, also called vacuum aspiration, are the most common type of in-clinic abortion. Before the procedure, you will take pain medication to help with the cramping. Depending on where you choose to get the procedure, sedation may be an option for you. You will also take an antibiotic to prevent infection after the procedure.

Your cervix will need to be dilated before the procedure and there are different ways that your nurse or doctor might do this. Laminaria, small sticks made of seaweed, are placed in your cervix a couple of hours or even a day before your procedure. They slowly expand by absorbing your bodily fluids, thus stretching your cervix. In some cases, the doctor or nurse may use medication to open your cervix instead.

Usually, there are two people in the room during an abortion. The doctor or nurse performing the abortion and a nurse or staff member to assist in the procedure and offer you support during the abortion.

The doctor or nurse will insert a speculum into your vaginal canal. He or she will examine your uterus, then insert a thin tube through the dilated opening in your cervix and into your uterus. Using suction, he or she will remove the pregnancy tissue from your uterus. They may also use a curette to ensure that all the tissue is removed. The procedure should only take between five and 10 minutes. After the procedure, you will stay in a recovery area until you feel like you are ready to leave.

           Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

D&E is typically only used for abortions that happen 16 weeks after your last period. The doctor or nurse will use the same cervix dilation process from vacuum aspiration abortion. For abortion later in the pregnancy, you may receive a shot through your abdomen before the doctor or nurse begins the procedure.

You will receive pain medication to mitigate the cramping and sedation may be an option, depending on your provider. Some sedation simply relaxes you while you are still awake, while others will make you fall completely asleep. You will also take an antibiotic to prevent any post-operation infections.

There are typically two people in the room during your procedure. The doctor or nurse performing the abortion and another staff member or nurse to support you and assist the first doctor or nurse.

The doctor will follow the same steps as a vacuum aspiration abortion. He or she will insert a speculum and examine your uterus. He or she will then inject a numbing agent into your cervix. They will then insert a small tube into your uterus and use a series of medical tools and suction to remove the pregnancy tissue. This procedure usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. You will then stay in a recovery room for about an hour or until you feel ready to leave.

What Are the Early Signs of Pregnancy?

Not knowing whether you are pregnant can be a cause of stress and confusion for many women. You probably have so many thoughts running through your head as you consider your options, unsure of what to do next. You may be looking for answers, especially if you believe you may be experiencing small changes in your body.

In the early stages of pregnancy, your body can show certain symptoms that signal to you that you may be pregnant. In this blog, we will discuss some of those early signs of pregnancy and what to do next!

           A Missed Period

The most obvious early sign of pregnancy is your missed period. Of all early signs of pregnancy, surveys show that 29% of women report that a missed period was the first one they noticed. However, a late period is not always cause for alarm. Stress, illness and other outside factors can also cause your period to be late. Nevertheless, if you notice that you are late, it might be time to take a pregnancy test.

           Nausea and Vomiting

You have probably heard that morning sickness is a common early symptom of pregnancy, and it is true. Many women deal with nausea and vomiting as their bodies adjust to the radically changing hormones. Luckily, not everyone experiences morning sickness, so you might be lucky enough to avoid it. Even for those who experience it, morning sickness typically subsides by week 14 of the pregnancy.

           Mood Swings

Mood swings, like morning sickness, are caused by your body’s hormone changes during the first trimester. They are defined as extreme or rapid changes in mood or demeanor. If you are experiencing frequent, unexplained mood swings, it could be a sign of early pregnancy.

           Spotting and Cramping

After conception, there is a chance you will deal with spotting. This is typically called implantation bleeding, which occurs between six and 12 days after the egg is fertilized. You may also experience some cramping similar to menstrual cramps. In fact, many women mistake these cramps, along with spotting, as the start of their monthly period.

           Breast Changes

Changes to your breasts could also be a sign of pregnancy. You might notice that your breasts are swollen, sore, tender, or heavier than usual. This can occur as early as one week after conception and is caused, once again, by your changing hormone levels. This is another common symptom that could be associated with PMS or your monthly period, so keep that in mind as you assess your other symptoms.

           Headache and Back Pain

It is common for women to experience frequent headaches and back pain early in their pregnancy. An isolated headache could be just that – a headache. But if you experience these symptoms at an unusually high rate, you might be pregnant, so be mindful of these changes to your body.

           Fatigue

Many women notice the onset of fatigue or tiredness as early as the first week of their pregnancy. Most women feel more tired than usual at some point during the first trimester. By the end of the second trimester, most of the fatigue will subside.

When do Early Signs of Pregnancy Start?

Because each woman’s menstrual cycle is different, you will not encounter exactly the same early symptoms of pregnancy as everyone else. In most cases, women notice various early signs of pregnancy around the fifth week after conception. With that said, you might see your first signs of pregnancy within the first week. That’s why it is so important for you to be in tune with your body, so you can spot these symptoms early.

After Experiencing Early Signs of Pregnancy

After you experience any of the previously mentioned pregnancy symptoms, you might want to consider taking a pregnancy test. It is recommended that you wait at least a week after your missed period to take a pregnancy test since that will give you a more accurate reading. That said, the longer you wait after your missed period to take a test, the more accurate that test will be.

It is completely normal to feel scared or worried when you see early signs of pregnancy. If you don’t feel comfortable taking a home pregnancy test, you can take one for free at Mya Women’s Center. How To Share the News That You’re Pregnant

Nowadays there are extravagant, outlandish ways to share just about any news. Social media feeds are clogged with creative gender reveals, promposals, first days of school, and so much more. But what if the thought of telling your partner you’re pregnant is making you feel less like you’ve got butterflies dancing in your belly waiting to explode outward into a creative insta post, and more like you’ve been punched in the gut?

Breaking the news of an unexpected pregnancy can be nerve-wracking to say the least. Please know, you are not alone! According to the CDC, forty-nine percent of all pregnancies can be classified as ‘unintended’. That’s almost half of all pregnancies in the US!!

Married, Single, In A Relationship, Unsure?

The status of a relationship, or even the lack of a relationship, can be an influencing factor when approaching an unplanned pregnancy. Though many situations may seem to have black and white answers, I would challenge that nothing is really as uncomplicated as it may seem from the outside. Many married couples are contemplating abortion for a variety of reasons, while women incurring pregnancy outside of a relationship are choosing to raise a child/children on their own. Communicating with your partner is the first step in the process of choosing what is right for you.

To Test Alone, Or Not Alone?

Some women suspect they are pregnant and inform their partner right away. In these situations, the partner is often present when the ominous test results come back. For many other women, that test is taken in painstaking solitude. With a positive result comes the burden of knowing and having to share that knowledge – usually requiring some degree of tact. Chances are you’ve got some conflicting emotions raging inside of your own head right now. It’s okay to take some time to absorb the information; and it’s okay to be unsure.

           Choosing A Venue

When you’ve determined that the time has come to tell your partner that you’re pregnant, the next question becomes, ‘how?’. Plans should be made to have the conversation in a private place, especially when unsure how your partner is going to feel about being pregnant . This gives space for him to react honestly.

           Give Him Time

Once the news is out there, give your partner a few minutes. Allowing time for your partner to absorb the information may be difficult – but it’s important to entitle them to the same time you had to process this.

           Responses May Vary

Reactions can range from ecstatic, to furious, and everything in between. Sometimes a lack of reaction may occur, and can be even harder to endure. More often than not, though, some degree of fear is shaping his response. Recognizing this can change the way you view your partner’s reaction. Give time, and plan to converse again once everyone is thinking clearly.

           Abortion and Insurance: The Facts

Will My Health Insurance Cover an Abortion?

As a medical professional, I am often reminded how fortunate I am to work with people and not with the major insurance companies that, today, dictate how people are cared for. The world of health insurance is convoluted and difficult to understand. Because we know that a woman’s mind is often spinning when contemplating an abortion, we sought to answer some common complicated questions about abortion cost and insurance coverage, so you can focus on the important stuff.

           Private Insurance VS. State Insurance

State insurance in Ohio is known as Ohio Medicaid. Medicaid provides coverage to a number of children, pregnant women, low income adults, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Qualifying individuals receive this coverage through government funding.

Private insurance is provided through employers and/or can be purchased independently through the marketplace. Anthem, Humana, Cigna, and Aetna are a few examples of the many private insurance companies out there today.

In 2007, Ohio passed legislation that stated no local or state funding is to be used to pay for an abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or imminent maternal risk. This means that state insurance cannot be used to pay for an abortion in the case of an unexpected pregnancy. Furthermore, employees working for the state are also unable to use their insurance for abortive services.

Most private insurances do cover abortions in Ohio. Proper identification and insurance cards should be presented at the time of service in order for coverage to be applied.

Why Does Planned Parenthood List Medicaid As One Of The Accepted Insurance Providers?

While unable to apply Medicaid benefits directly to an abortion procedure, Medicaid can be used for some preliminary testing and treatment, and for additional services afterwards. It can, therefore, serve to decrease the overall cost of your abortion appointment.

Do I Have to Use My Insurance?

It is not mandatory to use health insurance for an abortion. Some women elect to pay for services out of pocket to maintain their privacy and prevent their abortion services from being listed on their family policy summary.

What Is The Out Of Pocket Cost For An Abortion?

On average an abortion can cost anywhere from $550-$1,100 in Ohio. Abortion by means of the abortion pill usually sits at the lower end of that price spectrum. Surgical abortions begin at around $550/$600 and increase in cost as gestational age progresses. The further along in the pregnancy, the more invasive the procedure may be, and therefore the higher the associated cost. Other factors potentially impacting price include RH factor (RH negative women may need an additional Rhogam injection to prevent issues in future pregnancies), BMI (body mass index), and the utilization of optional medications to aid with pain and nausea.

Many clinics do offer income-based pricing, which will require that evidence of income and household size be provided.

So you’ve gotten a positive result on a home urine pregnancy test, now what? Up to one-third of all pregnancies can end in a natural miscarriage. With rates of naturally terminating pregnancies this high, the next step after a positive test is to determine viability via ultrasound. From there, Mya Women’s Center will help you wield your right to choose what comes next.

The only way to determine if a pregnancy is viable is to have an ultrasound. Viability entails that a pregnancy is, in fact, located inside of the uterus and that there is a fetal heartbeat present. If these criteria are not met, a pregnancy is not considered viable and will not result in a live infant birth.

A pregnancy located outside of the uterus is actually quite dangerous. On rare occasion, a pregnancy can develop and implant into one of the Fallopian tubes. This is referred to as an

If I’m Thinking About Having An Abortion, Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

If you are reading this article, chances are you’ve discovered that you are pregnant and you’re not sure what to do next. If you are considering an abortion, it is imperative to have ultrasound testing done beforehand. Both surgical abortions, and medical abortions (via the pill), have the potential to bear consequence on your current and future reproductive health. It is not advisable to proceed with any type of medical procedure unnecessarily. A clinic with your best interest in mind will always perform ultrasound before initiating any procedure to first ensure that it is warranted.

Initial ultrasounds hold a great deal of very important information. The measurements obtained in this early testing are proven to provide the most accurate dating for the pregnancy. It is this information that sets the gestation clock for the entirety of the pregnancy.

In order for the practitioner who will be managing your pregnancy to have access to the data obtained in the first ultrasounds, it is best to schedule your ultrasound with that provider.

Nancy Brinker a Catalyst for Women’s Health

Women are distinctly different from men – there’s no question about it. The famed book from the 90’s Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, was certainly onto something. Fast forward almost 30 years, and today we are seeing movements that are communicating the beauty and strength of womanhood in a resounding manner.

Pioneering better research and education for women’s health, particularly in regards to breast cancer, Nancy Brinker is among those who have paved the way for women today. We are all familiar with the little pink ribbon that has come to symbolize breast cancer. For Nancy, the story behind the pink ribbon hits close to home. Susan Komen, Nancy’s sister, was diagnosed with breast cancer in her mid 30’s. With the support of her sibling and the rest of her family, Susan underwent multiple surgeries and many rounds of chemo before succumbing to breast cancer three years after diagnosis. Before her passing, Susan made Nancy promise to find better treatment, and ultimately a cure, for breast cancer so that women would not have to suffer her same fate.

What a promise! I feel safe in saying that we all have a woman or two whom we would be willing to move the world for. Nancy has made good on her vow and has raised more than three billion dollars for breast cancer research, education and medical services. Innovative in her approach, she has received a multitude of awards for her service in furthering women’s health.

Dedication took on a whole new meaning for Brinker just as her cause was gaining some momentum. Nancy was, herself, diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy with multiple rounds of chemo. Her strength through the course of her disease and her passion to prevent other women from experiencing the tribulations of breast cancer are some of the reasons we admire Nancy. And while the sheer fact that her organization has been a contributor for the research that has led to almost all of the treatment advances for breast cancer in the last quarter century is astonishing, her efforts to destigmatize women’s health may be even more impressive.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, women’s health issues were considered taboo. In a male-dominated corporate society, men were less than eager to talk about breasts and all things ‘female’. Nancy Brinker absolutely revolutionized the way we think and talk about female health. As breast cancer became acceptable to discuss, it began to hit the radar for funding and research opportunities. The advances made in breast cancer treatment and education since Nancy’s infamous vow have saved countless lives and impacted many others.

What You Need to Know Before Choosing an Abortion Clinic

Is the information you are receiving unbiased?

There are many clinics in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding areas that provide abortion services. Most of these centers claim to have the woman’s best interest in mind; however, some do have financial and even political agendas that may be influencing the direction of their care. Here at Mya we know that this can be a difficult time and we want to make sure that you do not fall victim to the biases and agendas of others. It is our goal to get you the most accurate information to make the best decision for you.

How can I tell that a clinic has my best interest in mind?

A facility that focuses on empowering women will, without a doubt, strive to educate. As healthcare providers it is our responsibility to ensure our patients have an adequate understanding in order to give informed consent for tests and procedures. We do not shy away from providing information, because it is an educated woman who will have the autonomy to make good choices for herself. There are clinics, though, that will skim over information, rushing to the signature portion of the consent.

According to K H Satyanarayana Rao in an article entitled ‘

Informed Consent: An Ethical Obligation or Legal Compulsion?

’, “Informed consent must be preceded by disclosure of sufficient information. Consent can be challenged on the ground that adequate information has not been revealed to enable the patient to make a proper and knowledgeable decision. Therefore, accurate, adequate, and relevant information must be provided truthfully in a form (using non-scientific terms) and language that the patient can understand. It cannot be a patient’s signature on a dotted line obtained routinely by a staff member.”

The article goes on to state that failing to ensure a woman is educated enough to make an informed decision can be constituted as assault in the form of ‘battery’. It is imperative that women know they have the right to this information.

Another red flag tipping off potential bias or agenda is the use of phrases like ‘all’ and ‘never’. Few things are ever that black and white. Attempting to convince you they are, may be a sign that there is an underlying bias.

At Mya, we do on-site testing to confirm pregnancy viability. Up to 30% of first-trimester pregnancies end naturally, so testing ensures abortion is necessary.

Why Should I Confirm My Pregnancy Before an Abortion?

            Here at Mya, we recommend

           preliminary testing

done on site to determine that an abortion is necessary. Within the first trimester, up to thirty-percent of all pregnancies can end in a natural miscarriage. Unfortunately, not all clinics are willing to perform the additional testing to confirm pregnancy viability and, therefore, need for abortion. This potentially subjects women to unnecessary financial cost, stress, and possible medical complications. Staff at Mya are committed to avoiding unwarranted procedures and to ensuring our patients receive the most accurate information about their situation and the options available to them.

All appointments at Mya begin with a clinical grade urine pregnancy test. This step identifies the presence of the hCG hormone in the urine. Some level of this hormone is present in the urine throughout the entire pregnancy. However, a urine test alone is not diagnostic of a viable pregnancy. HCG levels fluctuate naturally and in the instance of spontaneous miscarriage. A urine test simply tells us that the hormone is present, not whether the levels are trending up or down. For more detailed information, we need additional testing.

One of the diagnostic studies used to obtain information about a pregnancy is ultrasound. Ultrasound is the only way to confirm location and viability of pregnancy and can be performed starting at five weeks and one day from the last menstrual period. This study can determine if a urine test produced a false positive, and it will aid in identifying pregnancies that are not viable (pregnancies occurring outside of the uterus and those where no heartbeat can be detected). It is also instrumental in dating a pregnancy which enables the Patient Advocate at Mya to compile a tailored and detailed list of the options available to you. Ultrasound studies are offered free of charge to all patients seen at Mya with a positive urine pregnancy test.

Abortion is a topic that many people choose to avoid talking about. This can lead to misinformation and can cause confusion and unnecessary stress when an untimely or unwanted pregnancy arises. While there are hundreds of questions that may come to mind when facing pregnancy and considering abortion, we want to answer a few of the top questions we receive at Mya Women’s Center.

What Do I Do When I Find Out I’m Pregnant?

Unintended pregnancy is often first discovered by a missed period and an at-home pregnancy test. After we verify a positive result on our medical-grade pregnancy test, we offer a free ultrasound in order to determine the stage of the pregnancy and viability. This allows us to provide you the information on the legal abortion option available to you in the state of Ohio or Pennsylvania. All the facts we give are completely unbiased, non-judgmental, and ethical, freeing you to write your own story.

In addition to free pregnancy confirmation and ultrasounds, we provide free testing for two of the most common and treatable STI’s. These STI’s can travel through your cervix, which is open during an abortion procedure and can result in pelvic inflammatory disease. PID can cause future infertility, complication, or abnormal pregnancies. It is important to know if you are at risk before an abortion procedure.

has been a box-office hit, grossing $100.5 million its opening weekend (making it the biggest-ever opening for a female director!), and for good reason. This version of Wonder Woman is an inspiring superhero, showing strength, love, and forgiveness. But did you know that her actress, Gal Gadot, is a powerhouse in real life as well?

Gal Gadot is an Israeli actress, model, and former soldier—and a mother to two beautiful daughters. Gadot filmed much of Wonder Woman while pregnant with her second daughter Maya. During are-shoot of one scene, she was five months into her pregnancy. The filmmakers got creative, cutting out a section of her iconic costume and putting a bright green cloth over Gadot’s belly—to be edited post-production in the same way filmmakers use green screen. According to Entertainment Weekly, director Patty Jenkins commented that “we will be able to tell [Gal Gadot’s] [new] daughter Maya that she’s in her mom’s stomach right then, in the middle of that battle scene.” Gal, her husband, and her firstborn daughter Alma welcomed little Maya in March.

In our culture, it is often implied that women are incapable of accomplishing their dreams because of their season of life. Women are underestimated and criticized in all kinds of circumstances. If a woman chooses to dedicate herself to a career, she is seen as selfish or too ambitious— but if she dedicates herself to a family and decides to be a homemaker, she’s seen as weak and not ambitious enough. And women who decide they want both a family and a career are told they can’t possibly do it all— they are seen as “less than” in both of their passions. More and more, however, inspiring women like Gal Gadot are rising up to show the world that women can shine in any season— that all vocations require a type of strength and power which every woman has inside. By the love she pours into motherhood and career, Gadot honors and elevates both, empowering women of all walks of life.

A positive pregnancy test can rock your world. It’s normal to feel anxious, and it’s normal to have questions. Here are five key things to remember in that moment.

, anxiety disables neurons in your prefrontal cortex—the area of your brain responsible for planning, weighing consequences, and making decisions. For most women, an unplanned pregnancy brings an initial wave of anxiety. Give yourself time to breathe, to think, and to talk with people who can help you. No decision should be made because of pressure—whether that pressure comes from anxiety or from other people, who may try to influence you towards a decision that they think is best, but which you may be unable to weigh for yourself in the moment. You don’t have to know what to do or even what to feel right away. It takes time to calm the initial shock, explore all your options, and make sound judgments.

           2. Confirm Your Pregnancy

Although at-home pregnancy tests are fairly accurate in measuring HcG hormone, recent studies have shown that approximately 30% of all early pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. Before proceeding with any next step, you need to know whether you actually have a viable pregnancy—a pregnancy that will continue. The only way to confirm a viable pregnancy is at a medical clinic via ultrasound. Ultrasounds can also accurately date a pregnancy, which can factor into what options are available for you. At Mya, we provide free ultrasound testing to confirm your pregnancy and tell you how far along you are. Our staff is here to give you the best possible medical and confidential care.

Women facing unplanned pregnancies often feel trapped or powerless. It’s crucial to realize that you have choices! At Mya, one of the most important services we provide is our “Options Consultation.” During an Options Consultation, you are able to sit down with a trained advocate one-on-one and discuss, in detail, the options available to you. We are here to go over abortion, adoption, parenting, and new, little-known options such as Holding Time. Holding Time is a non-profit organization that connects an expectant mother to a loving family that will care for her child for no cost during the first year of his or her life, while she secures the needed support systems (and stays connected to her child and the caretakers). Mya can help you learn about this and all of your other options.
